Literacy Is Legacy: Why Greater Cleveland Must Address Literacy Across the Lifespan

Published August 22, 2026

Equipped4LifeNow’s Literacy Is Legacy Family Empowerment Symposium brings families, educators, advocates, youth leaders and community organizations together to address literacy from early childhood through adulthood.

Literacy Is More Than an Education Issue

Literacy is often discussed as an education issue.

A child needs to learn to read. A student needs to pass a reading assessment. A teacher needs to improve classroom outcomes.

But literacy is much bigger than what happens inside a classroom.

Literacy influences how we learn, work, communicate, advocate for ourselves, navigate systems, support our families and create opportunities for the next generation.

That is why Equipped4LifeNow is presenting the Literacy Is Legacy Family Empowerment Symposium on Saturday, September 19, 2026, in Cleveland.

The symposium is built around a simple but powerful belief:

When we strengthen readers, we strengthen families. When we strengthen families, we strengthen communities. And when we strengthen communities, we transform generations.

The Literacy Crisis Is a Lifespan Issue

National literacy statistics demonstrate the urgency.

According to 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress data, only 31% of fourth-grade students and 30% of eighth-grade students performed at or above NAEP Proficient in reading.

Literacy challenges also extend well into adulthood. National adult-skills data from 2023 showed that 28% of U.S. adults ages 16–65 performed at Level 1 or below in literacy.

Literacy in Cuyahoga County

Here in Cuyahoga County, The Literacy Cooperative’s 2024–25 Literacy Dashboard provides an even closer look at the challenge:

  • 65% of kindergarteners are not on track to read at grade level.

  • 36% of third graders are not considered proficient readers.

  • 11% of students fail to graduate high school within four years.

  • 54% of adults are not proficient readers.

  • 9% of adults do not have a high school diploma.

Behind every percentage is a person:

  • A child learning the relationship between sounds and letters.

  • A middle-school student struggling to understand increasingly complex assignments.

  • A teenager trying to complete college applications, financial-aid paperwork or a first résumé.

  • A parent trying to help a child with homework.

  • An adult navigating healthcare information, workplace documents, financial decisions or an online employment application.

Literacy follows us throughout life.

From First Words to First Careers

The literacy journey begins before a child enters kindergarten.

Talking, singing, storytelling, reading aloud and exposure to books help establish the foundation for later learning.

As children progress through school, the stakes change. Students move from learning how to read to increasingly needing to read in order to learn.

By high school, literacy becomes directly connected to independence.

Young people must navigate résumés, job applications, college and training programs, financial aid, workplace expectations, digital information and increasingly complex decisions about their futures.

Career navigation itself requires literacy.

And literacy does not suddenly stop mattering when someone receives a diploma.

Adults need literacy to navigate employment, healthcare, finances, parenting, technology, civic participation and everyday life.

That is why addressing literacy requires a lifespan approach.

Literacy, Confidence and Mental Wellness

There is another part of this conversation that deserves attention: the relationship between learning, confidence and mental wellness.

Repeated academic struggles can influence how a young person views themselves.

A student who continually struggles with reading may eventually stop saying, “This is difficult for me,” and begin believing:

  • “I’m not smart.”

  • “I’m not good at school.”

  • “This isn’t for me.”

That distinction matters.

Supporting literacy therefore requires more than improving academic skills. Young people also need opportunities to develop confidence, resilience, self-awareness, communication, leadership and the ability to advocate for themselves.

This intersection is central to Equipped4LifeNow’s work.

A Conversation That Includes the Entire Lifespan

One of the centerpiece conversations will be the Literacy Lifespan Panel Discussion.

Rather than limiting the discussion to elementary reading, panelists will examine literacy across four critical stages.

Early Literacy

How do families establish strong literacy foundations before and during the first years of school?

What can parents and caregivers do at home?

How do we identify children who need additional support?

School-Age Literacy

What happens when children transition from learning to read to reading to learn?

How can literacy challenges affect confidence, behavior and achievement across subjects?

High School and Career Navigation

How does literacy influence graduation, career readiness, college access, skilled trades, entrepreneurship and employment?

What skills do young people need to successfully navigate opportunities after high school?

Adult Literacy

How do literacy challenges affect employment, healthcare, finances, parenting and economic mobility?

How can communities make adult literacy resources more accessible without creating stigma?

Together, these conversations reinforce an important truth:

There is no age at which a person’s opportunity to become a stronger reader, learner or navigator of life should end.

What Will Our Literacy Legacy Be?

Literacy is not the responsibility of one teacher.

It isn’t the responsibility of one school district.

It isn’t solely the responsibility of parents.

And it certainly isn’t a challenge that any single organization can solve.

It requires a community willing to recognize that the child learning their first words today may become tomorrow’s student, employee, entrepreneur, parent, mentor and community leader.

What we invest in that reader today can influence generations tomorrow.

Join Equipped4LifeNow on September 19th as we work toward stronger readers, stronger youth, stronger families and stronger communities.
